The Aftermath of Book 7 Thread! SPOILERS

Postby sabby on Sat Jul 21, 2007 10:26 am

So, what did we think? I've vbeen hearing many complaints about it, but I think it was just fine.
Suprisingly, I was right about most of the things, except for the Death list, and Snapes alliegance. Damnnn. I think I'm still in shock over the death of my second favorite character. I'll mourn later.

Who's complaining? I thought it was fine. I was pretty stunned that she kept Harry alive, I was sure she'd kill him off but I was darn near delirious that she did. Never doubted Snape's allegiance myself, the "vibe" of the passages of him passing off information was just all off too me. I was pretty surprised to find out just how decent he was though.
I guess if I have to complain about something....she did NOT have to kill off Fred, there just wasn't any excuse for that! No purpose whatsoever, took away from the story instead of adding to it

*goody goody, I get to edit with real names* (feel like a dufus dancing around it)

It's cool, by the way, to post whatever spoilers you want in this thread. If people don't want to read them they shouldn't be in here!!

I rather liked the book, myself. The 5th & 6th books weren't nearly as strong as the rest of the series, thanks to all the lengthy (and not always necessary) plot setup they contained. It was nice to see her back on form for this one. Structurally, I think the one thing that really hurts DH is how many plotlines had to be wrapped up. We're all for the Percy comeback here, but really, does anyone else think it was ridiculously unnecessary and forced? To me that part felt like a contractual obligation or something.

Oh, and I wished she hadn't put in the nineteen years later section. The book ended so nicely and then she had to go and tack that on :(

Really though, I liked it overall, I promise!!
Bartender, pour us a dirty martini and keep them coming. This is vintage Jackie Collins and we'll be here till closing.

I know :(I was reading it and as cute and heart warming as it was, it felt like fanfiction to me.
The Percy bit did seem a little out of place but I did love it, but now I want to know what it was that made Percy loose his sense of humour! My inner fanfiction reader still thinks it's a long dead Weasley that noone talks about.
I think Fred had to die. It was a twin, Bill or Percy. If Remus and Tonks had died, I figure that one newlywed couple has to survive, and I wished it had been Percy, because we got to cover the whole emotional spectrum of "OMG MY TWIN IS HURT" in the start of the book. This is most probably just because my favorite character is Percy, and I do enjoy my favorite characters dying, except when they had JUST GIVEN BIRTH.

For the record, I started this thread with the spoilers label because I didn't want to bring in any of this to a thread that had held all the leadup to getting the book, mostly for the sanity of the people who haven't finished yet. (Kia, Alby, et..al)

I loved the 19 years later. It kinda made sure also, that there could be no more books really. Loved Percy coming back, and I thought for sure he'd totally die once he was back, not FRED! Fred's one of my favorite characters! I lost it after Harry watched Snape's memories and walked toward the forest and then turned the stone, and Lupin, Sirius, James, and Lily all appeared. Absolutely balled.

The whole thing was so fast-paced. There felt as if there was absolutely no down time. Which I admit I missed this time around. But I really can't complain, I mean, I kinda knew it would be. OH and LOOOOOVED Molly taking out Bellatrix and her "Not my daughter you bitch!" line. I totally cheered out loud.

Couldn't believe Tonks and Lupin were gone! And the end of Voldy was pretty much perfect. I loved it. And Neville finishing off Nagini, and all the house-elves with swords and such. It's still sinking in. But I still think the 5th book is my favorite. We'll see. I need to read Hallows again, but I'm still recovering from reading it the first time!

i cant belive fred died either there was no need and also there was no need for colin creevy to die :(poor little thing. the fact tonks and lupin died hit me hard coz of the whole harry having no parents and now ted tonks has no parents.

i nearly cried when dobby died i was so upset. the bit that got me the mast in it was harry feelings when he was walking towards his "death" and i was so excited when he came back and confused as to why he got a choice to die or not.

in the battle of hogwarts i thoght all the protective spells the teachers sent out like the wind and the desks and stuff where totaly kewl and my favorit part of the series. i always kew snape was good but i never realised to what exstent he was good and was shocked and happy. i was sad coz he is my second favoite charater (afte neville) and he died and that teamed with fred and dobbys death washard to swallow.

i loved the book but had mixed feelings about the epilouge as i liked it and it rapped up the story but it seemed a bit "and they all lived happily ever after"

I cried when Fred died, even though I knew it was coming since some jerk posted spoilers the day the book was leaked, and I had no reason to think of avoiding the internet that soon. If he'd been fighting when he died, I think I'd have taken it better, but in mid-laugh, darn it. I hate it when you know about a death, but don't expect it when you're reading such amusing lines - those hit me really hard. Hedwig's death was just ... wrong, and Dobby's death kind-of threw me over the edge and I had to put the book down for a while. I kind of see why a lot of people had to die, but it really felt she was overdoing it when people kept dropping every other chapter.

Was it was just me, or did the plot move really unevenly? I thought it was rushed in a few places, and dragged in quite a few places, especially compared to the pace of the other books.

I really wanted Neville to kill Bellatrix, or at least Harry (both lost loved ones to her, Molly was just taunted). The duel was pretty good though, and it was nice to see her more vengeful side.

I thought the epilogue seemed more like an excuse to say who got together with who, considering how little plot it really contained. I'd have liked to know about more characters than the Trio, their kids, and a couple others if she was going to wrap things up. I don't really think who married who counts as telling much about who they've become, mentioning their jobs would have done that more smoothly. It did start out as a children's book though, so I expected a rather corny ending.

I do believe I'm already looking forward to this movie more than HBP though, haha.

I still don't know what to think.. I got my hands on the book yesterday afternoon at one-thirty and only stopped reading for three hours because I was in a cafe with my mother's friends... it was my own personal corner of hell, knowing that the book was so close and I was halfway through and it would be bad form to sit and read in the middle of a conversation (that and I tend to "yes" people when I'm not paying attention, and it's dangerous to do that in the middle of a greek cafe.) But yeah, got back in the car to go home and didn't stop reading until midnight, when I finished the book.
Some parts were so absolutely unneeded. She split my twinnies... being a twin myself it's a shock. Especially because we've been called the girly (though thankfully not as ginger) counterparts to those two, our friends are surprised that we haven't burned the house down or done any (serious) damage yet. I don't think she was right to leave Teddy an orphan- hasn't she had her fill of writing in orphans? And I don't understand why she had to go so far as to kill off Hedwig- it felt like a meaningless slaughter. Actually... most of the deaths in the book felt like meaningless slaughters.
I'm glad she wrote the hallows as the counter to the horcruxes. I'm immensely proud that it was Neville of all people to slay Nagini. I'm still not sure where Lily's eyes fit into it all, save that it was another part of Snape's redemption. I cracked up with the hole Holeyness shpiel. I didn't like the house-elfs coming into the battle- it was overkill to me.
And to whomever said that the nineteen years later bit felt like fanfiction- I wholeheartedly agree. It's nice to know that Harry and Ginny get married, as do Hermione and Ron, and that they have kids and happy lives and that Percy's still the annoying ginger, but it was overkill.
Though now I have a feeling there's going to be a whole boatload of fanfiction between the end of the last chapter and the beginning of the epilogue.

i think the part about lilys eyes was mainly becasue snape loved hre and when he died he wanted harry to look at him. i think it was kind of a looking into the eyes of the woman he loved as he died even if those eyes where on her son and not her.

the uneveness of the book was right the begining and the end where rele fast paced and action packed and then when they where traveling there where about 8 chapters where it just dragged.
